What are Suspension Lift Kits and what do they do?

A lift kit contains a number of modification items which are installed on your vehicle in order to lift the suspension while retaining the correct suspension geometry. Installing a suspension lift kit means that there is often greater clearance between the underside of your vehicle's chassis and the road or ground. By installing a lift kit, you create a larger space where your tires usually fit, thus meaning that by installing larger tires, you can increase the distance between your vehicle and the ground or road still further. Lift kits not only serve a practical function, but also an aesthetic one too. They can not only add to the usefulness and adaptability of a vehicle, but considerably improve its looks and appeal too. Upgraded suspension components are offered to actually improve the performance of your vehicle.

What types of lift kits are there?

There are three different types of lift kits; a suspension lift kit, a front leveling kit and a body lift kit.

  • Suspension Lift Kit
A suspension lift kit replaces the front and rear suspension components and shock absorbers - the lift kit raises the suspension of your vehicle by a predetermined height. The effect of changing the shocks and suspension components is to increase the distance between the axle and ground and making the vehicle travel better. A lift kit also improves the articulation of the vehicle. A suspension lift kit produces better results than a body lift kit in terms of ride height and handling and appearance. It's important to note that in order for your speedometer or odometer to remain accurate, you may need to recalibrate after adding a set of  larger tires.

  • Leveling Kit
Front leveling kits are offered for nearly every make and model. The intent of a leveling kit is to raise only the front of the vehicle a modest amount to remove the factory rake and to  allow installation of a larger tire size.  The combination of the leveling kit and larger tires provides more ground  clearance for off-road adventures plus provides a more  pleasing finished look. Leveling kits are an affordable option from a full suspension lift kit and many are designed to be installed in your home garage. In some cases, longer shocks are either not required, or shock extensions are provided eliminating the expense of replacing your factory shocks.
  • Body Lift Kit
In the past, a body lift kit was usually the cheapest option for someone on a budget who wanted to improve the all-terrain capabilities and ground clearance level of their vehicle, although it has to be noted that they are not the ideal choice for most 4x4 or other specifically designed off-road vehicles. A typical body lift kit works by the installation of blocks and spacers around the vehicle, which lifts the body away from the flame and increases the space available under the wheel arch. It did not impact upon the vehicle's suspension in older models. Some of the later model body lifts will require additional bracketry and are more complex to install requiring a trained mechanic. When factoring the cost of professional installation, there are times when a suspension lift is actually more cost effective. It is worth noting, however, that if you do use a body lift kit to lift your vehicle, you may need to make other modifications such as adding gap guards to conceal the frame and raising bumpers in order to accommodate the improvement.

What are the benefits of installing a lift kit on my vehicle?

Now that we understand what function a lift kit performs, the question has to be why would you want one on your vehicle? This is easy to answer; for many people increasing the distance between the axle and ground is vital when driving off-road, fording rivers and streams or driving on dangerous, pock-marked, rock strewn, less-than-flat terrain. The bigger the clearance, the less likely your underside will be damaged by any of these elements and the more harsh the terrain your vehicle will be able to travel over. For other people, they may just prefer the powerful look that a lift kit brings to their vehicle, especially when finished with some other additions to the bodywork (all of which are available from Rocky Mountain Suspension Products). Increased ride height improves visibility too and improves the field of vision both on and off road for the driver.
